Troves of trophies

In past editorials we have discussed what to do with dog-show ribbons and dog-show photographs, and now we will tackle what to do with that trove of trophies that you have accumulated over the years. Some of those trophies are sterling silver, but most are silver plated or pewter, and have been in cabinets and closets tarnishing to a lovely golden bronze color. There are Revere bowls of every size, trays, tea sets, vases, picture frames, ashtrays, tulip cups and various pieces of silver something or other. Then, of course, there is the flying victory trophy, copied from the original bowling-ball trophy. One would hope after the excitement of winning your first flying victory all that followed were given away or returned to the kennel clubs that they came from. Other trophies that have been given are pieces of glass in assorted colors, shapes and sizes. It’s the carefully wrapped ones that you want to keep that break on the way home. On the rare occasion, no trophy but cash prizes. But that is so rare as to almost be non-existent. But back to that closet … What do you do with all those old trophies? Within the sport, the answers are easy. Re-donate the trophies to the clubs from which they were won. Give the trophies to kennel clubs that hold match shows, sweepstakes and other competitive events, like agility and obedience. Nicer unengraved trophies can be used at future point shows. But the universe is bigger than that. Donate them to nursery schools, kindergarten classes or any school or other local charitable organizations to be given to children as some kind of reward or award. Halloween is a perfect time to give away those unwanted trophies to the child wearing the best costume. It’s spring, and time to clean out those closets. Remember, one man’s unwanted possession is another man’s treasure.
