Looking Ahead

As the last three months of the 2021 dog-show season begin, it’s time to start planning for 2022, in the hope that the dog-show calendar will be back with fewer and fewer canceled shows. Kicking off the new year will be the moved-up dates for the Westminster Kennel Club dog show, which will be held on Monday, January 24, Tuesday, January 25, and Wednesday, January 26. With that move, the Purina® Pro Plan® Show Dogs of the Year Awards dinner partnering with Dog News will take place on Sunday evening, January 23. As we all know and lived through, there were very few shows held in 2020. But even with very limited shows, we recognized the accomplishments of the seven top-winning dogs, one from each variety group. Because of Covid-19, last year’s dinner had to be canceled, and we were unable to celebrate the successes of the top-winning dogs for 2020. So at the upcoming dinner we will also recognize the winners from last year. Having already been recognized in Dog News and sent their respective trophies to commemorate their wins, the breeders, owners and handlers of those dogs will be invited to the dinner and recognized by the attendees.

With the change of dates, we were fortunate to secure once again the fabulous event space Gotham Hall for the event. But as of this writing, it is the law in New York City that anyone attending a sporting event, theater or event space must show proof of a Covid-19 vaccination. This law is being strictly enforced. The nominees for the Breeder, Owner Handler, Professional Handler and Judge have been notified. Because of all the canceled all-breed and specialty shows in 2020, this year there will be no awards in those two categories. The names of the nominees will be announced the day the online voting begins. Online voting for the winners will commence on Friday, October 15, and end on Wednesday, December 1. We would like to thank the most current winners in those four categories: Karen Staudt Cartabona for Breeder of the Year, Linda Souza for Owner Handler of the Year, Marcello Chagas for Professional Handler of the Year and Donald Sturz for Judge of the Year for their learned input and time in selecting this year’s nominees in their respective fields. It is always a great honor for Purina® Pro Plan® and for us at Dog News to host this event and bring us together to help those in our sport of purebred dogs celebrate their outstanding accomplishments during the year. A special black-tie event in a magical setting, with great food, drink and entertainment, surrounded with friends from across the country. Very special, indeed … so we are looking ahead.
