Dust off the tuxedo -- Show Dogs Awards are around the corner

The voting is over for this year’s PURINA® PRO PLAN® SHOW DOGS OF THE YEAR AWARDS in the following categories: Breeder of the Year, Judge of the Year, Professional Handler of the Year and Owner Handler of the Year. Those winners will be announced along with the Top Junior Handler and the Top Obedience Dog, and of course the coveted Hall of Fame Inductee, while we celebrate the show records of the top-winning dogs of 2021 and 2020. The BLACK TIE AFFAIR will take place on Sunday evening, January 23, at Manhattan’s GOTHAM HALL. It will be a test for some of us who have not been to a BLACK TIE affair since the pandemic. So drag that TUXEDO out of the back of the closet and try it on; you have been forewarned. ...

When you are a vice president of public relations and communications, you learn too quickly that you don’t need a lot of flowery words to get to the heart of the matter. So that’s exactly what BRANDI HUNTER, vice president of public relations and communications at the American Kennel Club, did when she said “I DO” to XAVIER MUNDEN on their wedding day on July 31, 2021. On behalf of all of us at DOG NEWS, we send our belated best wishes to you both. (P.S. BRANDI, I don’t remember any mention of your marriage in any of your press releases! So forgive us for being a little late.) ...

The entry and breakdown of breed entries for the two-day AKC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP dog show in Orlando have been posted, and the entry is 5,051 dogs. That will whittle down to just seven when DANA CLINE selects his Best in Show winner on Sunday evening. ELLIOTT WEISS will do the same honors for the Best Bred By Exhibitor. Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Kennel Cub TOM DAVIES will judge the final of the National Owner-Handled Series. ...

That smiling new face behind the anything-you-can-think-of-to-buy stand of the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB – reminiscent of the lyrics to the song “COME TO THE SUPERMARKET (IN OLD BEIJING)” sung by BARBRA STREISAND, or, as we like to say, if it is big enough to put an AKC logo on it, order it and we will sell it – it’s JACKIE FISHER, daughter of the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB’S manager of club development GUY FISHER. It’s nice to have another generation of FISHERS back at the dog shows. ...

Following an illustrious, well-deserved and award-winning career as a breeder, exhibitor and judge, JEAN HETHERINGTON (I’m proud to say one of my best and oldest friends in this sport) judged the Bulldog Club of America National Specialty last week and then announced that was her last assignment as a judge. We love you and don't be a stranger.
