Race for 2021's top dogs is neck and neck

THANKSGIVING DAY is almost upon us, which signals the end run of the dog-show season. As we near the end, the top-winning dogs in each group – which are honored at the PURINA® PRO PLAN® SHOW DOGS OF THE YEAR AWARDS DINNER partnered with DOG NEWS – are currently hotly contested. Of the seven groups, three seem to be all but sewed up, but an unusual twist is that winners in the four remaining groups are still up in the air. Unusual in that by this time of the year, one or two group winners might be in play. It does make the races more interesting but nerve racking for those of us who have to get it all wrapped up and put to bed in time for the dinner at the earlier date of the WESTMINSTER WEEKEND. Normally we have until the second week in February but with WESTMINSTER being held earlier than usual – the third week in January – we are pushed. It’ll get done; just going through all the papers and notes on my desk and having a momentary panic attack. ...

The MIAMI SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA performed its third event of the season with the premiere of KAREN LEFRAK’S “JAKE THE PHILHARMONIC DOG.” KAREN’S original works have garnered lots of attention, with orchestras playing her music, which is getting radio air time as well. ...

AKC REUNITE, the pet identification and recovery service arm of the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB, has donated $75,000 to eight police-department K-9 units in Minnesota. The donations were made through its AKC REUNITE ADOPT A K-9 COP program. The funds are raised in a three-to-one ratio, along with the UNITED STATES POLICE CANINE ASSOCIATION and community members. ...

Another one of those horror stories involving alleged inhumane treatment of dogs with the surrender of more than 500 dogs from DANIEL GINGERICH, a dog breeder from Iowa. He had to identify and surrender all the dogs at his USDA licensed and unlicensed facilities. The dogs were transferred to several rescue leagues and humane societies. ...

Sending a special Birthday greeting to everyone’s favorite, WENDELL SAMMET. WENDELL has enjoyed a wonderful life in dogs, breeding and handling professionally and befriending newcomers to the sport, not to mention all who learned from him and went on to become well known in their own right, like JOSEPH VERGNETTI and RICKY KRIEGER. ...

Also celebrating Birthdays … FRED ASKIN, MICHAEL FAULKNER, KAKI FISHER, GAY DUNLAP, JERRY KLEIN, MICHAEL CANALIZO, REBECCA CARNER, SCOTT KIPP, JAY HYMAN, LINDA FLYNN, GLENN LYCAN, TIM KERNAN, CURTISS SMITH, PAT KEEN FERNANDES, RAY WARRINGTON, PAM DEHETRE and last but not least TONI SOSNOFF.
