New field rep, Boston Marathon icon, Dennis McCoy farewell

The AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB has announced that KIM RUDZIK has been hired as its newest field representative. A second-generation fancier, breeding Dalmatians with her mother, she is quite the force in the Terrier ring with her Am Staffs and has enjoyed success in other breeds as a professional handler. KIM starts her training on June 5 and will be relocating from her New England home to Salt Lake City. All of us at DOG NEWS send our very best wishes on her new position and want to let her know how much we in the Northeast will miss seeing her at local dog shows. ...

This week, 30,000 runners in the BOSTON MARATHON have a golden glow, with more than 250 dogs paying their respects to SPENCER, a Golden Retriever therapy dog who was the BOSTON MARATHON’S OFFICIAL RACE DOG. He passed away at the age of 17. Holding a Boston Strong flag in his mouth at mile three, he would be photographed with runners who stopped for him, even though it added precious seconds and minutes to their running time. For those of you attended or participated in the race, if those two faces at CORNWALLS on Beacon Street looked familiar, they were proprietors JOHN & PAM BEALE. Not dressed in running gear, they got enough exercise just dealing with the customers celebrating with food and drink. ...

This past Tuesday, friends and family gathered at Rey’s Restaurant in Raleigh, North Carolina, to help RANDY GARREN celebrate the life of the late DENNIS MCCOY. Among those attending were JACKIE BEAUDOIN, MARI-BETH O’NEILL, SUSAN SPRUNG, BETH SWEIGART, PETER GREEN, MICHELLE & MICHAEL SCOTT, DAVID FITZPATRICK, TERRY HUNDT, MARY MILLER, MATT HAWLEY, SUSAN O’NEILL, POLLY SMITH, PAM BEALE, MICHAEL FAULKNER, ROZ & ROXANNE HOSAKA, KATHERINE SUTTLE, MIYUKI UENO, DIEGO GARCIA, DAVID KIRKLAND, BARBARA OHMANN, DAVID & CINDY VOGELS, JEFF PEPPER, NANCY SHAW, BONNIE THRELFALL, TERRY &  CINDY GARREN, GLENN & REBECCA LYCAN, JOAN SCOTT, JEFFREY DEAVER, TERRY & JACKIE STACY, JANET FORD, JEAN HETHERINGTON, CAROLYN & GARY KOCH, JANET LANGE, MARIPI WOOLDRIDGE, KAROLYNNE MCATEER, MARY MERLO and ROZ & ANDREW KRAMER....

Thanks to a warming climate and the expanding deer population across the country, ticks have become a year-round problem. The deer tick and black-legged tick are the ones that carry Lyme disease. While they were mostly found in coastal areas, places like West Virginia and Eastern Ohio have now reported cases. Now with the warmer weather upon us, checking yourself and your dogs when you return from the outdoors is highly recommended by the CDC.
