So much going on the weekend of the WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB, which did start off on Friday evening, when four ladies — ELLEN CHARLES, KAREN LEFRAK, PATRICIA HEARST and MISSY GALLOWAY — co-hosted their annual cocktail party at DOUBLES in the Sherry-Netherland Hotel. They all share, among other things, a love of breeds that are French, as in Poodles and French Bulldogs. As in the past, the event was well attended, with an elbow-to-elbow crowd, and enjoyed by those lucky enough to be invited. ...
Sunday afternoon was a more somber but uplifting celebration of life for the late WENDELL SAMMET. The invitation-only crowd gathered together to exchange stories of a dearly loved man who enriched so many lives. In the midst of the WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB dog show came the announcement that MELANIE KING has been hired by the American Kennel Club as its newest field representative. MELANIE was the Best Junior Handler at the 1994 WESTMINSTER DOG SHOW. She was an assistant to professional handlers GLENN & REBECCA LYCAN and BRUCE & GRETCHEN SCHULTZ, and is a longtime English Springer Spaniel breeder and exhibitor. She will be located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the country. ...
The AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB gives high praise to the U.S. HOUSE AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE for its 2024 FARM BILL, which has provisions for improving dog-related issues and enhancing protection of dogs under the federal ANIMAL WELFARE ACT. It also wants quick action of reported dog abuse and the expansion of electronic health documentation for pets entering the United States, which includes that no puppies will be allowed to enter the country that are under six months of age, a topic that was addressed in last week’s QUESTION OF THE WEEK in DOG NEWS. ...
