Remembering Dr. Robert A. Indeglia, MD, PhD

The AKC judge and cardiovascular surgeon has passed at age 84

Dr. Robert A. Indeglia, MD, PhD, 84, passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Marie Antoinette (Cianciarulo) and Pasquale V. Indeglia, MD.

Bob — or Dr. Bob or Doc as he would be known throughout most of his life — lived a life of dedication and love. Bob graduated from Classical High School in 1954 and entered the esteemed pre-medical program at John’s Hopkins University, where he graduated in 1958. Bob continued his medical education at Georgetown Medical School, and completed his medical residency and PhD at the University of Minneapolis at the Mayo Clinic. Doc moved back to Rhode Island in 1970, and he became a lifetime resident of Narragansett.

Doc established what would be for decades to come the preeminent Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Center in New England. Practicing principally at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Providence, Fatima Hospital in North Providence, and ultimately at Miriam Hospital, Doc’s medical career spanned almost 50 years with hospital privileges at virtually every hospital in Rhode Island. Even today, his family cannot go anywhere in Rhode Island without hearing the familiar refrain from “strangers” … “Are you related to Dr. Indeglia?” . . . “He operated on my relative” or “he added years to my relative’s life.” Most importantly, these comments were always followed with “he was so kind and generous with his time.”

In addition to being a passionate sports fan and an avid golfer, Bob was a prolific dog breeder and a distinguished dog show judge, having been selected to serve as the Best in Show Judge for the famed Westminster Dog Show in 2007. His love of people, his love of medicine, his love of dogs, his love of sports were all paled in comparison to his love and pride in his four boys and their families. Doc, for all of your love you have given to the world, it and the thousands upon thousands that you touched love you right back. You will be missed but never forgotten.

A special thanks and love from Doc and his boys to his brother Gil, Dr. Barbara, Tony, Jeanette and the loving caregivers at Brightview. Your unwavering support to the end will always be remembered.

Doc is survived by his children, Vincent A. Indeglia and his wife Allegra, Robert A. Indeglia, Jr. and his wife Christine, Paul A. Indeglia and his wife Megan, and Marc A. Indeglia and his wife Karen. He was the beloved grandfather of Gabrielle, Lucas, Robert, Alexandra, Xavier, Benjamin, Kai, Nicholas, and Anthony. Doc was the brother of the Honorable Supreme Court Justice Gilbert V. Indeglia and his wife Elizabeth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 11, 2022, at 11 a.m. in St. Mary Star of the Sea, 864 Point Judith Rd, Narragansett. Calling hours will be held Thursday, March 10, 2022 from 4 pm to 7 pm. in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston.
