How cheap are our champions?
Editorial: April 11, 2025
The American Kennel Club has released its new point schedule, effective May 12, 2025.The countrywide point schedule comprises 15 divisions, starting with Division 1, which includes New England, all the way to Division 15, which includes Puerto Rico.
We selected Division 2, which encompasses Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, a one-time hotbed of dog-show competition. Then we looked at the entries needed for a five-point major in each breed in that division. The overwhelming number of entries needed for a five-point major was one over the point count, meaning six entries for a five-point major. For breeds that need more than six entries for five points, the number can be as few as seven in just one sex in the entry. The number of breeds in each variety group that need more than six entries for a five-point major are 15 of the 32 Sporting breeds, 12 of the 35 Hound breeds, 14 of the 32 Working breeds, 10 of the 31 Terrier breeds, 11 of the 25 Toy breeds, seven of the 21 Non-Sporting breeds, and 17 of the 34 Herding breeds. All other breeds and varieties, six entries for five points.
Below is the point schedule for Division 2.
