Lyndhurst … a popular repeat

The Covid-19 pandemic that forced the postponement of the 2021 Westminster Kennel Club from its traditional indoor winter Madison Square Garden show led to a summer Lyndhurst Estate outdoor dog show. That show was so well received by all that the postponed 2022 event, which was to take place last week, has again been moved to the Lyndhurst Estate venue and will be held in late June. So the 146th annual Westminster Kennel Club dog show will maintain its place in sports history as the second longest continuous sporting event in America after the Kentucky Derby. The show will be held over several days, with Agility held on Saturday, June 18, and Master’s Obedience Championship on Monday. The conformation classes will be held over three days – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 20, 21 and 22, respectively – with group judging to be held Tuesday and Wednesday. Given the resoundingly positive responses in Dog News after last year’s show, this is a very popular and welcomed alternative.

Acknowledging the inconvenience that the postponement has caused, the members of the Westminster Kennel Club have implemented these conditions:

The entire judging panel has been reinvited to judge their original assignments. There maybe one or two who have previous engagements that can’t be broken, but there is time for them to be replaced. Hard to believe anyone would miss the chance to have this show on their judging resume.

All the dogs that were entered in conformation at the postponed January show will automatically be invited back to attend the June event. It must be the same dog that was previously entered for the January show that will be invited – there are no substitutions. In addition, the top five dogs that normally are invited and were not entered will be invited once again.

All the dogs that were entered in the Agility competition and all the dogs entered in the Master’s Obedience Championship will be invited back to compete.

All those that were previously entered in Junior Showmanship will be invited back.

Basically all the dogs that were entered in all phases of competition will receive an invitation to return for the June event. You have to give the members of Westminster credit for trying to make the best of an unpredictable situation. So we’ll see you at Lyndhurst. It’s a popular repeat performance: Did you hear that, Mr. Weatherman?
