New York wasn't the only place celebrating dogs recently: While we were handing out awards at the PURINA PRO PLAN SHOW DOGS OF THE YEAR AWARDS DINNER partnered with DOG NEWS, our French cousins were doing the same in Cannes on the French Riviera. The annual CANNES FILM FESTIVAL, where the bold-face-name celebrities walk the long stairway in full fashion, posing halfway up surrounded by paparazzi photographing them, all made way for MESSI — not the football star, but the canine star of the ANATOMY OF A FALL motion picture. MESSI also posed halfway up the stairway after a brief teaching lesson for his owner and trainer LAURA MARTIN CONTINI. There he received his PALM DOG AWARD, the canine version of the PALM D’OR AWARD. He was not alone, as DEMI MOORE had her Chihuahua PILAF in tow. Canine companions at Cannes are becoming commonplace. The French are big animal lovers whose dogs can be seen in most restaurants dining with their owners. ...
We were very saddened to hear that Briard fancier PEG WEITZ’S home was severely damaged in a fire that resulted in the loss of one of her dogs. Fortunately, she was not injured, and will be staying with her son for the time being. All of us at DOG NEWS send our deepest sympathies to JULIE MUELLER and her brother RANDY MUELLER and family on the passing of their beloved mother ARLENE MUELLER. Matriarch of the Aurora Kennels, she bred champion Toy and Miniature Poodles, passing her love of dogs to her daughter. Starting in the 1960s, she was very active in the Oshkosh Humane Society and the Oshkosh Animal Shelter in Wisconsin. The family has requested that those wishing to make a donation contribute to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in her memory.
