Memories of James Mitchell

Mari-Beth O'Neill remembers a beloved friend, judge and rep

“Wilmington, Delaware!”

That is how Jimmy would answer the telephone when I called, usually with an added comment or two, spirited by his quick wit and sense of humor. Jimmy has been a friend for more years than I wish to remember.

Jimmy and I went to visit the Clarks when they were living in Cecilton, Maryland, for lunch over the holidays one year. He shared with me how the afternoon would go — and of course it held true. Fabulous lunch and lots of conversation that covered a myriad of topics.

PCA, Bryn Mawr, Westminster, Kennel Club of Philadelphia and many more of the annual events over the years … Many memorable times! When Jimmy first started to judge, and he was doing his first Herding Group, he was excited, and I told him not to get creative! When I spoke to him that night and asked what had he done, he said, well … I guess you will think I was being creative — I gave the group to a Belgian Malinois bitch. He was always the one to recognize the quality in any breed when judging the group.

We shared many good times and good friends over the years. I will miss our chats on my way home from work most evenings. Rest well, my friend!

A sharing of remembrances of Jimmy will be held after Best in Show at Bryn Mawr Kennel Club, Saturday, June 15, in Ludwigs Corner, Pennsylvania. If you are not able to make it but would like a memory shared, you may forward it to mbo@akc.org.
