As the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB celebrates its 140th anniversary, GORDON COMFORT has been hired as the new chief operating officer, filling a position that had been vacant for 10 years. The position was coveted by people working within the company, but an outsider whose background has no purebred dog experience was selected. Hopefully he will learn the inroads of the board and the fancy, as this is not the typical not-for-profit organization. He will be working out of the Raleigh office. We wish him good luck in his new position. ...
This weekend is the WESTCHESTER KENNEL CLUB, the official start of the fall dog-show season, which coincides with the 31st anniversary of TAKE THE LEAD. This show is where the charity was introduced by its founding members, who included DOTTIE COLLIER, TOM BRADLEY, JEFFREY PEPPER, PATRICIA LAURANS, ERIC STEEL, MICHAEL LARIZZA and ELLEN FROST. This past weekend, there were seven shows in five days, all at the same site. The first day there were two shows in one day that ended at 9:30 p.m., then three days of single shows and then on Monday two shows in one day. Why do we need seven shows in five days? Wasn't there some rule about no more than five shows in one location without a break in between? ...
