10 Questions ...

Profession: CFO of our son’s commercial printing company — still. He won’t let me retire!

Dog-sport involvement: Since I was in my 20s, my parents were heavily involved, especially in English Setters. My dad was president of Western Reserve KC and also the English Setter Association of America and a delegate for WRKC.  My mother was raising dogs and then judging. They both were responsible for the ES Futurity. After coming back from college and getting married, I naturally obtained my first setter. I finished her myself in 1965 and had my first litter soon after that. The Flat-Coats came a bit later. I would call myself breeder, owner, multiple club member and officer, show chair, judge, delegate and all that goes with all of that. Our daughter raises ES and Border Terriers. My husband calls us all obsessed!

Hometown:  Chagrin Falls, Ohio

Astrological sign: Virgo

1. Do you have any dog-show superstitions?

No, but I used to pray to Frank Oberstar, Sam Pizzino and my father for sun for Western Reserve KC on the polo grounds in Chagrin Falls — all ancients remember what happened when it rained there.

2. TV-show guilty pleasure?

Not so much — I’m a reader.

3. If you were president of AKC for one day, what would you do?

A job I don’t want.

4. Most valued material possession?

Our Maude Earl of a Flat-Coated Retriever and two Springers that I obtained at Crufts back at Earl’s Court many moons ago.

5. What is something no one would guess about you?

That I imported my foundation Flat-Coated Retriever, Am Ch. Shargleam Shorelark, from the famous UK Shargleam Kennels back in the ’80s  She was my “heart dog.”

6. Who would you compare yourself to?

Hopefully my mother, Nancy Frey.

7. What are you “famous” for?

My carrot cake on New Year’s Day.

8. What website do you visit most often?

A draw between Wordle and, oddly, Noodles the pooch.  She is on Instagram and is a riot — my alter ego!

9. What was more memorable, your most satisfying win or disappointing defeat? And what was it?

Winning BOS myself with English Setter Ch. Hemlock Lane Time Out at the AKC Centennial show under breeder-judge Warren Brewbaker. Jan Knight and I co-owned her, and Bob Ennis showed her and finished her championship.

10. What do you wish someone would ask you?

To go to the Galapagos Islands with them.
